Crown glitches, also known as “fast scattering,” is a type of scattering that appeared in the third observing run (O3) and looks like repeating glitches at frequencies of ~20-50 Hz and appear in groups of ~3-5. Crowns often make an arch in frequency over time.
Cause:
Light scattered off of LIGO’s optical components and re-entering the beam with a different phase.
Status:
Extinct, thanks to fixes applied after O3 and completed during the O4a/O4b break.
Examples:
Audio Example:
Make sure to wear good headphones!
